Fall Dinner 2013

Location: The Princeton Club Thursday October 24, 2013 Guest of Honor: Judge Patricia M. Di Mango Justice Patricia M. Di Mango was the first Italian-American woman to be elected to the New York State Supreme Court in the 2nd and 11th Judicial Districts and to sit as a judge in the criminal courts for the city of New York. Currently, she holds two positions. First Deputy Administrative Judge for Criminal Matters, Second Judicial District and Supervising Justice of the Bronx Felony Project. During her tenure as a Criminal Court judge she was elevated to the position of acting Supreme Court Justice and was assigned to the Matrimonial Term of the Supreme Court in Richmond County, and thereafter, was reassigned to the Kings County Supreme Court, Criminal Term to preside over felony criminal matters.

Justice Di Mango gained public recognition for handling high profile trials, amongst other cases, such as the homicide of 7 year old Nixmary Brown and the duel jury hate crime murder trials of a young Latino man. Justice Di Mango also tried another wellknown homicide involving the murder of 4 year old Marchella Pierce. Justice Di Mango is presiding over a companion case to the Marchella Pierce homicide. This case is one of first impression in New York in that the ACS workers supervising the Brett-Pierce family were indicted for criminally negligent homicide relating to the death of 4 year old Marchella. Justice Di Mango has a reputation for handling a large volume of cases in the Up-Front Parts and Felony Arraignments. For many years she has been presiding over all cases involving Crimes Against Children.

While obtaining her law degree from St. John’s University where she graduated in the top 10 percent, Judge Di Mango was the recipient of the Moot Court Scholarship Award, the New York Practice American Jurisprudence Award and placed second in the National Moot Court Labor Law Competition. In addition to her Juris Doctor, Judge Di Mango holds a Master’s Degree from Columbia University in Developmental Psychology and a Bachelor’s Degree Cum Laude from Brooklyn College in both Psychology and Education and in 2012 she was chosen to receive the Alumna of the Year Award from Brooklyn College. She was also the 2012 recipient of the prestigious Rapallo Award. She is also the 2013 recipient of the Distinguished Judiciary Award from the Catholic Lawyers Guild. The New York State Supreme Court Officers Association named her as the Woman of the Year at their 2013 Awards Dinner/Dance.

After college and while pursuing her Masters Degree, the judge was a school teacher for the public school system focusing on special education of children with emotional and intellectual deficiencies.

Justice Di Mango returned to her passion for education and became an Adjunct Associate Professor of Criminal Law, Criminal Procedure and Forensic Psychology at St. John’s University for approximately 10 years. Currently and for the past 5 years, she is an Adjunct Associate Professor at New York Technical College for Criminal Law and Procedure. A multitude of Justice Di Mango’s decisions have been selected for publication and she has contributed numerous articles to bar association’s journals. Additionally, the Judge frequently draws upon her enthusiasm and her gift as an educator and has lectured to lawyers and non-lawyer organizations and schools.

Justice Di Mango is the chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Law and Paralegal Studies Department, at New York City Technical College, and she is also the chairperson of the Assigned Counsel Advisory Committee for the 2nd, 11th and 13th Judicial Districts and Recording Secretary of the Cathedral Club of Brooklyn Board of Directors.
